I learned a rather entertaining bit of news tonight: the baby in the picture above is my mother. Normally this would not be such a humorous fact, except that this particular photograph won her an award overseas.

My mother's father, my grandfather, was in the armed forces when my mother was a baby (this picture was taken at about her 3-month mark). While he was overseas as a mechanic (I think in the Philipines), he entered her baby picture (this one, in fact) in a contest. It won and my mother received a clay chinese doll that she has in a glass case in her bedroom to this day. It really is quite a charming little doll. Ah, but the real question is this: What contest did she win?

MY MOTHER WAS NAMED "JOLLIEST BABY."

She's my hero.
